ince the creation of our original Power Pet ®door in 1992, many so called electronic dog doors have come and gone, several claiming to have some of the features of the genuine POWER PET product. The fact is, no other electronic dog door or cat door on the planet even comes close. Power Pet doors were created by some of the nation's best engineers. They are fundamentally superior to all other competing electronic pet doors. That's why genuine Power Pet doors outsell all other electronic pet door brands combined. In fact, our PX-2 large model is the single largest selling pet door (electronic or not) on Earth!
What is "Fully Automatic"? We define "Fully Automatic" as being a pet door that not only uses a motor to automatically open an access panel but, one that also has 4 way access control, auto safety retract, directional sensing and automatic dead-bolt locking. By that definition Power Pet is the World's only truly Fully Automatic electronic dog door.
What About Motorized Doggie Doors? In evaluating an electronic doggie door the first question is, "Does the door really open and close by itself or does it just unlock, requiring the pet to push it open?" Most so called "electronic pet doors" on the market are not opened by a motor and require the pet to push open the panel. That is something that a lot of pets don't like to do. Motorized electronic doggy doors are in a class by themselves, giving you huge advantages over electronic dog doors that merely unlock. Not only are motorized dog doors convenient for you and your pet, they are better sealed and far more secure. This is because the linear track in which the panel moves up and down provides a continuous, air tight seal and also provides a mechanically stronger holding mechanism that resists being kicked in by an intruder. Electronic dog doors that just unlock and swing open have to seal the sides of the swinging panel. These seals are not air tight and allow air to pass through just like flap doors, making them susceptible to drafts, less energy efficient and less secure against intruders, just like flap doors. Electronic dog door models like the Petsafe Smart Door and the Petsafe Passport are not motorized and are simply not in the same class of a Power Pet door (although, they like to advertise as if they were). There are also various magnetic and electro-magnetic dog and cat doors that operate a simple solenoid that unlocks the door when is senses a magnet on the pet's collar. Such products are made by Ideal Pet Products (a very good dog door manufacturer), Dog Mate and others. These types of products really do not provide much more in the way of security or insulation than a conventional flap door and don't really warrant much consideration here.
Who Makes Motorized Dog Doors? There are only three manufacturers that make motor driven electronic dog doors. They are High Tech Pet, Solo, and Plexidor. In a nutshell, the Solo electronic dog door is produced in a small home shop by one or two assemblers. While fairly well made, Solo doors lack the advanced tooling that provides the great fit and finish of a Power Pet door. They also lack the professional engineering expertise that goes into a Power Pet door. Plexidor came into the market recently with what is basically a copy of our original aluminum extruded Power Pet, PP-2 model. This was a design we used to get into the market quickly with little investment in tooling. We abandoned this design nearly ten years ago in favor of our far more advanced models developed with millions of dollars' worth of production tooling. Aside from the fact that there is only so much you can achieve with cheap tooling, neither the Solo nor the Plexidor electronic doggy doors have the advanced drive system, sensing system, locking system or high performance of a genuine Power Pet. Only the Power Pet door is a professionally engineered product with the dependability, reliability and performance that will give you the peace of mind knowing that your pet can safely come in and go out while you're away while your home is kept safe, secure and well insulated.
What Makes Power Pet so Great?
Consider the Drive System: One of the many features that make the Power Pet door the best electronic dog door on Earth is its patented cable drive system. Our drive is powered by very compact, powerful and quiet DC gear-motor. The motor lifts the door panel with a cable. When the motor turns off, the panel is lowered by gravity using the motor gears as a break to slowly, smoothly and safely return panel to its closed position.
While both Solo and Plexidor have attempted to copy our cable drive, both use a cheaper, larger AC motor. The AC motor makes these doors bigger and bulker and louder. This makes the Solo door so deep that it must be mounted between the wall studs. This type of installation is difficult. Mounting a Solo door in a home door or sliding glass door requires a lot of customer work and ends up looking pretty ridiculous. The Plexidor has the advantage of having copied our original slim aluminum extrusion design but, they then put the very large AC motor at the top allowing it to stick out of the housing, looking bulky and unattractive. But, the real problem is that neither door achieves the speed, smooth operation and quiet motion of the Power Pet. Largely because they both use the cheaper AC motor.
DC gear-motors are more expensive but, we use this type of motor on our Power Pet door because you can't beat its smaller and quieter operation. It also takes a bit more expertise to control but, in the right hands a DC gear-motor drive can be extremely, quick, quiet and compact. Our circuitry is a novel use of what is called pulse-width-modulated motor control. This is a very efficient control system that delivers a lot of power very efficiently, producing mostly mechanical energy and little heat. The result is an electronic dog door that is slimmer, more attractive and easier to install while delivering unparalleled lightning quick and whisper quiet performance.
Consider the Sensing System: Power Pet's patented sensing system is also fundamentally unique and superior to other types of sensing systems used. We use directional ultrasonic sensing which allows the door to open only when your dog is on a direct approach, not when it is just wandering by, sitting or sleeping next to the door. No other brand of electric dog door provides directional sensing. Solo uses pretty old technology in the form of a simple magnet worn around the dog's neck. The dog worn magnet is pretty rugged but the magnetic sensors in the door won't work around appliances like washing machines, and refrigerators. The Solo door can also be opened by any magnet making it decidedly unsecure. Plexidor uses newer RFID technology which sounds pretty cool. However, the receiving antenna has to be made in a large loop at dog level. It is inserted in the panel itself so that the panel cannot be made transparent. The RFID also lacks the directional sensing and gets a lot of false triggers. The directionality of our ultrasonic sensing system makes it far superior to magnets or RFID sensors. True, in the past our ultrasonic transducers were somewhat susceptible to water damage when fully immersed in the lake or pool. But, no more. Our new MS-4 and MS-5 transmitter collars use newly invented, hermetically sealed transducers that are fully waterproof. The MS-4 will work without fail in rain or snow and is fine for most cats and dogs. The ultra-rugged MS-5 has no problem joining your pooch in a cool refreshing swim. It's fully submersible up to 6 feet of water.
Consider Safety: While we're not saying that any leading manufacturer makes an unsafe electronic dog door, some are safer that others but, none as safe as a Power Pet door. Electronic dog doors that are not motorized use hard swinging flaps that can catch a dog's tail if it back swings and closes before the dog's tail gets through. This can't happen with a motor driven door because the panel does not swing. We found it amusing when we heard our leading competitor who makes a non-motorized dog door refer to ours as a "guillotine door". True, the sliding vertical panel does kind of look like a guillotine but, it weighs less than 2 pounds. Even a dead drop from the 18" height of our large model's vertical opening would not produce enough force to cause injury to a pet or child. However, the Power Pet door's panel is returned to its closed position with a smooth safe break assisted mechanism to insure that it can apply only a few ounces of downward force while closing. In addition to that, Power Pet is the only electronic dog door that employs an ingenious Automatic Safety Retract System (ASRT). The internal processor continuously monitors the downward speed of the panel while closing, If it so much as touches any obstructing object on the way down, it automatically reverses direction and reopens.
Consider Security: In addition to many other patented features, the Power Pet door employs a patented automatic dead bolt lock. When the panel is in the closed position, a steel dead bolt automatically engages to lock it in place. The panel absolutely cannot be lifted without a signal from the collar or by activating the manual switch inside your home. The collar's signal is digitally coded so that only your dog's collar will activate the panel. As previously stated, the Solo door can be opened by any magnet. This is a highly unsecure system. The Plexidor, Petsafe Smart Door and Petsafe Passport door all use radio frequency coding to open the panel. This is more secure than Solo's magnets but RF signals are easily jammed by stray radio signals in the environment (TVs, radios, cell phones, etc.). Indeed, some of the most common complaints about these doors is that the signal gets jammed and the dog can't get in or out. Power Pet's ultrasonic signal is robust and cannot be jammed by stray RF signals, and its patented digital coding can't be jammed even by stray environmental ultrasound producing the most secure and reliable electronic dog door made.
Consider Unique, Useful Features: Power Pet doors include the following advanced features not found on Petsafe doors, Plexidors, or Solo doors,
- Directional Sensing - Door opens only when the pet is on a direct approach, not when it is just wandering by, sitting or sleeping next to the door.
- Independent Indoor and Outdoor Range Controls - Set separate activation distances for inside and outside activation.
- 3 Power Modes - Power Pet doors may be operated by an external AC wall adapter, rechargeable battery or AC plus battery back-up.
- 4 Way access control - A simply one button control that allows you to set the door for In Only, Out Only, Full Access or Closed and Locked status. (Passport claims to have 4 access modes but requires programming)
- Hold Open Feature: You can set the panel to remain in the open position continuously if desired.
- PAWS Integration - Power Pet Doors are part of our Pet Activated Wireless System. The MS-4 or MS-5 ultrasonic collar also activates our Sound Barrier and Yard Barrier sonic fences that keep pets our of "OFF LIMITS" areas. The Power Pet door is also activated by our RX-10 Universal Electronic Fence collar so you may contain your dog in the yard while allowing him to operate his Power Pet door and a host of other PAWS products all from a single collar.
